About The Thangka

Introduction

It is believed that Tara was born from the tears of Bodhisattva of Compassion, Chenrezig (Avalokiteshvara), to liberate sentient beings from true sufferings of samsara. In Buddhist tradition, she is seen as a compassionate figure who swiftly removes physical, emotional, and spiritual obstacles hence protecting and guiding practitioners during spiritual practice. Tara manifests in multiple forms, each representing different aspects of compassion, wisdom, and protection. Each emanation of Tara has a distinct color and performs a specific function.

21 Taras are the primary emanation of Tara, each with unique attributes, offering special benefits to practitioners. The 21 Taras are often visualized during prayers and rituals.

The practice of 21 Tara is quite popular within the Buddhist community. The method of practice of the emanation of 21 Tara is believed to have arisen from the 21 Praises of Tara taught by Buddha Samantabhadra. Based on these praises, several lineages have adapted various forms of the 21 Taras. As a result, 21 Tara takes on different forms, colors, ritual objects, names as well as functions in different Buddhist Lineages.

This particular depiction of the 21 Tara draws inspiration from the teachings of Suryagupta, an 11th-century Mahasiddha. Each emanation is different in iconography with unique posture, color and implements.

Painted in the Menri style of thangka painting, the sacred figures are detailed with pure gold. Overseeing all the Taras, the head of the Lotus family, Buddha Amitabha is depicted at the top of the painting.
